Why Your Hair Isn't Growing

You start on a clean slate. You promise yourself to take better care of your hair and monitor your growth closely. You have a dream length you want to achieve. You wait.

It suddenly stops growing. You did everything right. Didnt you? What went wrong?

Your hair could have stopped growing for many reasons. Hair grows approximately half an inch per month. However if it grows at a much slower rate or you can't detect any growth at all, then there could be many possible reasons:

1. Diet.

I know, I know. I talk about diet a lot. But what you consume is extremely important for your hair, skin, nails and the rest of your body. You literally, are what you eat.
If your diet lacks certain vitamins, your hair growth will slow down or even stop altogether.
Make sure you consume enough vitamin A, C, and E, for a healthy scalp. Vitamins like B5, B6 and B12 prevent hair loss and promotes healthy hair.

2. Stress

Stress is a well known cause of hair loss. It can lead to alopecia and telogen effluvium. These two conditions lead to hair loss or stunted hair growth.

3. Genetics

Your genes determine your hair color, length, thickness and even texture. It also affects the rate of hair growth and can be the reason your hair growth is slow.

4. Hair Breakage

The reason you're not seeing any reasonable growth in your hair may be because your hair is breaking at the same rate it's growing. So as your hair grows, it also cuts and breaks at the same rate, so you assume it isn't growing at all.
There could be a lot of reasons your hair is breaking. It could be dryness, harsh chemicals, poor handling, split ends etc.

5. Chemicals

I always stress that any person who wants healthy hair should stay away from products with harsh chemicals. Chemicals will fade your hair color, reduce thickness, damage your scalp, ruin your hair shaft and of course, cause hair loss.

6. Scalp

The hair grows out from the scalp. You won't have healthy hair with an unhealthy, dry or itchy scalp. An unhealthy scalp will affect the structure and strength of the hair follicle. This can slow down or even stop hair growth.
Also, tight hairstyles or even packing your hair into tight styles will stress your scalp and your hair may fall out or stop growing. That's why a lot of people don't have edges or front hair. Tight braids and other styles can cause irreversible damage to your scalp

7. Age

As you grow older, the hair growth rate slows down, and hair loss starts. For most people this starts around the middle age, but for some, it starts earlier or later.

8. Medication

Some drugs can interfere with natural hair growth cycle. Talk to your doctor about your medications so you won't be taken by surprise and so you can take the necessary precautions, if there are any.
